Research Summary

Professor Huang has participated in a wide range of research projects, including Internet characterization, network simulation, and multicast routing protocol design. These experiences have nurtured her interest in modeling, simulation, and performance issues of the Internet in general. To be specific, the theme of her research has been:

  • identifying appropriate mathematical techniques to characterize aspects of the Internet,

  • constructing efficient simulation models that capture critical characteristics,

  • applying the known models and simulation techniques to analyze and evaluate protocol design in a realistic Internet-like context, and

  • understanding the implications of newly improved protocols to the characteristics of the Internet.

Take Internet traffic for instance, she and her collaborators have identified that TCP’s closed-loop control plays a critical role in traffic characteristics. That has led to a finite-state model of TCP that preserves the closed-loop control mechanism. Applied to network simulations, the model is capable of generating realistic traffic with low memory usage. With the model and its simulation implementation, Prof. Huang’s team is able to show, with limited computing resource, some problems in earlier designs of TCP-friendly congestion control.
