Professor Huang is specialized in laser, nonlinear optics, and optical tomography. Using laser and nonlinear crystals on optical communications and bio-photonics, his major research directions are:
1. wideband fiber light source and optical amplifier devices: including super broadband (1.2-1.6 mm) optical amplifier, light sources for high resolution, high penetration depth optical coherence tomography, and multi-functional photonic crystal fiber devices.
2. nonlinear wavelength conversion devices: including quasi-phase matched blue/green lasers and wideband wavelength converter for optical communication bands.
3. laser and dielectric thin films: including single frequency, Q-switched, as well as mode-locked ring lasers. He is also interested in developing ion-assisted electro-gun deposition for high damage threshold laser coatings.
